About the event
You are invited to join a community conversation called a Salon. For those not familiar, salons grew out of the 17th- and 18th-century tradition in France, where people gathered in small groups to discuss literature and philosophy, share musical offerings, read poetry, and explore current events. Largely organized and run by women, they became the roots of Enlightenment thought and the basis for promoting democratic ideals of tolerance, respect, and freedom of expression. The salon seems a fitting model for our times. Come mingle with people you might not know or might not otherwise meet for evenings of thoughtful, reflective dialogue.
We will begin with a discussion of economics based on a collection of 14 essays by Wendell Berry, titled Home Economics, that offer a serious examination of some inconvenient truths about what it means to live with the earth, not just on it. We will explore the root meaning…
